¿De dónde habrá sacado ese léxico?

On the first week of October, 2008, I purchased a 24″ iMac, configured with a nVIDIA GeForce 8800 graphics chipset. An AppleCare plan was purchased, as well.

During three years I was the happiest of Apple’s customers. My machine was above my own original expectations, useful and elegant. However, around October the 15th, 2011 (that is: one week after my AppleCare plan was over), my computer’s display started to freeze, suddenly and without notice, rendering it useless, although it was accessible via ssh.

I took the machine to an authorised retailer (where I bought it). They were very kind, but told me they weren’t able to reproduce the problem; so they asked for a procedure they could follow precisely. I took the machine back home, and found a secure way to produce the failure: a graphics-intensive OpenGL screen saver, running for less than an hour would do the trick.

Before returning to them, I opened a case in expresslane.apple.com (case 266549332). When I spoke with Apple’s personnel in Spain, I told them I would like to ask for an exception in my AppleCare policy: I asked them to apply the insurance policy to my case, even though the first failure occurred some ten days after the original policy was over. They answered me that in order to study that possibility, first thing to do was taking the machine back to the store, and have them determine that the problem was, in fact, of hardware nature.

So I took my machine, once again, to the store. And I gave them the expresslane case ID. They told me they were going to deal with Apple and, that if an exception was possible, they would let me know.

What they did let me know, several days later, was that such exception was not bestowed. And that the repair would cost me about 900€, plus labour costs.

Obviously, I asked them to reconsider their decision, on the following basis:

1. The machine failed only ten days after a three-years insurance policy had ended.
2. Heat-related problems with that chipset, after more or less that amount of time, is documented in Apple’s very user forums (a foremost example being http://bit.ly/uXz8Gk).
3. I just can’t have the machine repaired by my own means. Sadly, should you decide not to bestow the exception I’m asking for, the machine will simple be packaged and put to catch dust for the years to come.

Today, in the morning, they expressed their last resolution: they are not going to make an exception. If I want the machine repaired, I’ll have to pay (a lot of money).

Where is the legendary Apple customer service? Where are the top-of-notch quality computers? How come a 2400€+ machine fails after only three years? How come a repair can cost more than 1000€?

To be honest, I feel like I’ve been defrauded. But I’m only a customer, and it’s clear that Apple no longer give a shit for their customers.

I’m using a HTC Desire (bravo) device, with a class-4 4 GB Micro SD card, partitioned as 2.5 GB (fat32) + 1 GB (ext4) + 200 MB (ext4) + 200 MB (swap). Performance is superb, and stability is very good (much better than the 1.4.1 version). The Quadrant graph:

Currently testing battery life, although it doesn’t look bad, neither.

I decided to give it a try with some of the stuff I had at hand. My desktop computer’s logo, for example (picture attached).

The result I obtained was so jaw-dropping and mind-blowing that I repeated the experiment, and not once, but several times, always with the same outcome: Goggles was not able (willing?) to identify the famous logo.

I wonder: what’s going on here?

For the record: I’m running it on an Android device (HTC Desire).

Update: I’ve repeated the experiment with a different apple: the one illustrating the “Getting Started Guide” of “AppleCare Protection Plan”, and results are even more surprising:

It’s been able to find almost exactly identical images, but it just can’t tell what it is!

Me pregunto si eso será una señal para preocuparse. Apenas hoy por la mañana el sitio de SourceForge me pidió que cambiara mi contraseña porque tuvieron un incidente de seguridad…

9. Open Source Software

Conmino a los trabajadores a ignorar ese llamamiento. Lo último que necesita España en estos momentos es frenar –todavía más– la economía.

La gente inteligente busca resolver los problemas identificando las causas, no sólo atacando los síntomas. Y las causas de la situación actual (que en realidad no es tan grave como lo que se vive en otros países) son de índole mundial. Se trata de una recesión. ¿Cómo se ataca una recesión? Seguro que no se ataca con pasividad, con indolencia, con exigencias absurdas.

Si la huelga tiene éxito, tendrá un fuerte efecto de corto plazo en la economía local. Un grave, negativo efecto. Los empresarios se sentirán presionados (¿a hacer exactamente qué?). El gobierno se sentirá presionado (¿a qué? ¿A abandonar la tendencia a un modelo económico liberal?). Pero su efecto a largo plazo, su contribución a un bienestar económico que evite nuevas situaciones críticas, será prácticamente nulo. Por lo contrario: trabajar igual que todos los días, apoyar el crecimiento, meter el hombro: eso es lo que tiene un efecto –pequeño a nivel individual, lo reconozco– como grupo a largo plazo. ¿A qué opción nos llama nuestra madurez? ¿Qué decisión nos demanda el sentido cívico?

Es tiempo de mostrar madurez social, no de hacer pataletas. Hacer demostraciones de poder está bien para el circo, no para una economía tratando de salir a flote. A menos que esa demostración tenga un efecto positivo para todos los afectados… que no es el caso.

Y encima de todo, está el caso de los llamados «piquetes». Se trata de enajenados por su «misión» sindical, que no contentos con ausentarse irresponsablemente de su deber, pretenden –por vías no siempre amables– que los demás no puedan ejercer su derecho a trabajar.

Primero, lo primero: estamos juntos en esto. ¿Quieres un país maduro? ¿Quieres un país gobernable? ¿Quieres un país económicamente potente? Demuéstralo haciendo aquello por lo que te pagan, aunque no te guste. Ya vendrán, si todos pensamos así, tiempos mejores. Entonces será tiempo de negociar.

En el prólogo del interesante informe sobre el estado del arte del software de fuentes abiertas en la empresa española, 2009, Sebastián escribe:

Hace muy pocos años habría podido sonar a ciencia ficción
que España fuese un referente en el uso e implantación del
Software de Fuentes Abiertas. Hoy es una realidad, y esto
es consustancial al desarrollo de la propia Sociedad en
Red, porque la Sociedad de la Información es cada vez más
participativa, más colaborativa, en definitiva: más abierta.
Desde las administraciones públicas, somos conscientes de la
importancia de una política global e impulsora del Software
Libre en España, y por eso desde la Secretaría de Estado
de Telecomunicaciones y para la Sociedad de la Información
junto con red.es, hemos apoyado la creación de un Centro
Nacional de Referencia en materia de software libre y fuentes
abiertas, como es CENATIC.

CENATIC es el proyecto estratégico del Gobierno de España
para posicionar a nuestro país como referente en estas
tecnologías, igual que lo somos ya en muchos otros. Nació
con una clara vocación: ser un impulsor de proyectos,
un receptor de iniciativas y, sobre todo, un difusor de las
ventajas del Software de Fuentes Abiertas. Porque el uso de
estas tecnologías también tiene destacados efectos sobre las
empresas y la economía, además de implicar un modelo de
desarrollo empresarial sostenible basado en la cooperación, la
innovación, la transferencia de información y conocimiento, y
la excelencia.

Anteriormente, se habían realizado otros estudios que
ahondaban en los niveles de uso a nivel global de este tipo
de tecnologías, pero no existía hasta la fecha un estudio
que permitiera investigar las características estructurales y
económicas de las empresas españolas del sector TIC que
desarrollan actividades y servicios basados en Software de
Fuentes Abiertas, así como los beneficios, oportunidades y
barreras del modelo de Software de Fuentes Abiertas en las
empresas españolas usuarias de estas tecnologías.

Para poder conocer tales efectos y atributos, se ha impulsado
la realización de este Informe sobre el estado del arte del
Software de Fuentes Abiertas en la empresa española
2009.

Estoy firmemente convencido, de que ahora es el momento de
apostar decididamente por las nuevas tecnologías, y estudios
como el que se les ofrece a continuación, ayudan a comprender,
participar e incluso liderar los nuevos desarrollos tecnológicos
para contribuir al desarrollo de nuestra sociedad.

Me parece una lectura obligada para quienes están interesados en comprender las estrategias institucionales de adopción de este paradigma de distribución y explotación del software (y –¿por qué no?– del diseño y la conformación de la economía y la sociedad futuras).

No se trata de un manual en forma. Ni es un grueso volumen de reglas ortográficas o sintácticas. Son pequeñas piezas que describen de forma muy sucinta y con muchos ejemplos algún aspecto del idioma que vale la pena cuidar. Algunos microartículos son fáciles recordatorios de ortografía, otros ilustran vicios del idioma y muestran el uso correcto.

Todo aquel interesado en cuidar el idioma español será bienvenido.
